Applications for Piston-Diaphragm Pumps

Chemistry and Electroplating

Safe handling – even in critical situations.

In the chemical and electroplating industries, safety and durability are top priorities. Corrosive media, toxic substances, and sensitive processes require absolutely reliable pump technology. Piston-diaphragm pumps offer maximum safety thanks to the hermetic separation of the drive and the medium. At the same time, they enable precise pumping even under changing process conditions. Thanks to chemically resistant materials and a robust design, they are ideally suited for demanding applications—from acids to suspensions containing solids.

Typical applications:

  • Acids and alkalis
  • Electroplating baths
  • Chemical suspensions
  • Dosing and transfer processes
  • Filter presses

Mining, sand and gravel quarries

Built for what destroys others.

In the mining industry, conditions often push standard solutions to their limits: high solids content, abrasive media, extreme altitudes, and continuous 24/7 operation. Our piston diaphragm pumps are specifically designed to meet these challenges. They reliably handle slurries with high solids content while maintaining predictable wear rates—even at pressures and flow rates where other technologies fail. Thanks to their robust construction and high operational reliability, they ensure predictable processes and minimize unplanned downtime—a critical factor in remote and cost-intensive production environments.

Typical applications:

  • Filter press feeding
  • Tailings transport
  • Concentrate conveyance
  • High-pressure applications
  • Process water recirculation

Steel and Aluminum Industry

For when things get hot, heavy, and demanding.

Production processes in the metal industry are characterized by high temperatures, abrasive media, and continuous stress. Our piston diaphragm pumps are designed specifically for these conditions. They reliably handle even difficult media and offer high mechanical stability during continuous operation. The result is long service life and a stable production process—even under extreme conditions.

Typical applications:

  • Slurries from production processes
  • Cooling lubricants
  • Residues from metal processing
  • Filter press applications

Ceramics Industry

Consistency is Quality

In the ceramics industry, consistent flow is critical to the quality of the final product. Piston-diaphragm pumps ensure a constant and controlled flow even with viscous and solids-laden fluids. This minimizes process fluctuations and ensures reproducible results.

Typical applications:

  • Ceramic slurries
  • Slurry conveyance / filter press feeding
  • Dosing processes

Municipal wastewater management

Solutions that simply work.

Wastewater is unpredictable: solids, fibers, and fluctuating compositions place high demands on pump technology. Piston-diaphragm pumps are particularly resistant to contaminants and reliably handle even difficult fluids. This ensures stable system operation and reduces maintenance requirements and downtime.

Typical applications:

  • Sewage sludge conveyance
  • Raw wastewater transport
  • Thickening / dewatering
  • Filter press feeding
  • Return sludge

Energy sector

Efficiency and Safety – 24/7

In the energy sector, stable, continuous operation is critical. Downtime leads directly to production losses. Piston-diaphragm pumps offer a reliable and efficient solution for a wide variety of fluids and applications. They ensure consistent flow and high operational reliability—even during 24/7 operation.

Typical applications:

  • Process media
  • Auxiliary processes
  • Dosing systems
  • Filter press feeding

Automotive industry

Keeping your production running – without compromise.

In the automotive industry, stable and repeatable processes are crucial for quality and efficiency. Our piston diaphragm pumps enable the precise delivery of a wide variety of fluids, thereby contributing to consistently high process quality.

Typical applications:

  • Coating processes
  • Process chemicals
  • Dosing applications
  • Filter press feeding

Semiconductors and Electronics

Precision at the highest level

In the semiconductor and electronics industries, precision

Typical applications

Filter press feeding

When it comes to sludge dewatering, chamber filter presses deliver the best separation results—especially in large-volume, robust designs. For this to be economically viable, a pump is needed that can adapt flexibly to the process.

Emmerich piston-diaphragm pumps do exactly that: They start with a high flow rate at low pressure and then automatically switch to high-pressure operation as soon as filtration begins. This ensures short cycle times, stable processes, and maximum energy efficiency.

Our pumps can be controlled both mechanically and via variable frequency drives (VFDs). This allows performance to be precisely adapted to any application—whether manual, semi-automatic, or fully integrated into a process control system.

Of course, our product range also includes control systems and regulation technology—perfectly matched to our pumps and the requirements of modern filtration systems.

Hydraulic transport

Hydraulic transport involves a continuous conveying process—often over long distances and under demanding conditions. A typical example is the pipe etching process in aluminum production, where highly alkaline, abrasive suspensions are transported at around 80 °C against pressures of up to 120 bar.

Traditionally, centrifugal pumps handle this task. But it is precisely in this area that our piston-diaphragm pumps offer an energy-efficient and low-wear alternative. Thanks to their high efficiency, precise controllability via a frequency converter, and robust construction, they are more durable—and significantly more economical in the long run.

In short: Where centrifugal pumps waste energy, our pumps use it smartly.
