How a Piston-Diaphragm Pump Works

In a piston-diaphragm pump, everything works in perfect harmony:
The drive transmits motion to a piston that is precisely guided within a sleeve. This piston acts on a hydraulic fluid, which in turn drives the diaphragm—without any direct contact between the pumped medium and mechanical parts.

During the suction stroke, a vacuum is created in the diaphragm housing. The suction valve opens, and the fluid flows into the delivery chamber.
During the subsequent discharge stroke, the diaphragm moves in the opposite direction, the discharge valve opens—and the fluid is delivered into the discharge line in a controlled manner with minimal pulsation.

The result: a precise, leak-tight, and extremely durable pumping system, ideal for demanding and abrasive media.

Inside every Emmerich piston diaphragm pump is a powerful crankshaft drive that transmits motion precisely and evenly. A pulley converts the rotational motion into a precisely controlled stroke—smooth, efficient, and durable.

The pump head serves as the functional counterpart: It comes into contact with the pumped medium and is manufactured from steel, stainless steel, or plastic depending on the application. This allows each pump to be optimally adapted to the medium, temperature, and pressure requirements.

The interaction between the drive and the pump head ensures smooth, energy-efficient operation, minimal pulsation, and long service life—even with highly abrasive or chemically aggressive media.

Valve Technology and Control at Emmerich.

To ensure that every piston diaphragm pump delivers exactly what the process requires, we rely on precise valve technology and intelligent control systems—all perfectly coordinated.

The suction and discharge valves ensure a consistent flow rate and guarantee precise dosing of the medium. They are robust, easy to maintain, and designed for a long service life—even under high pressures, with abrasive substances, or with highly fluctuating viscosity.

We offer various control solutions: from mechanical control to electronically controlled systems, as well as integration with variable frequency drives (VFD) or complete process control systems. This allows each pump to be precisely adjusted to its individual operating point—efficiently, energy-savingly, and reliably.

Upon request, we supply the appropriate control technology directly—including programming, control cabinets, and documentation.
